In many ways, the Rheinmetall-Borsig MK 108 30mm cannon was considered to be a masterpiece of weapons engineering, due to it's compact size, ease of manufacture and hitting power. Although it was first designed by Rheinmetall-Borsig in 1940 as a private venture, the design was finalized in 1942. It met a later RLM requirement for a new aircraft cannon that could knock down enemy bombers with the lowest expenditure of ammunition.

this30mm is a very very low velocity, your not going to do anything but track a tank with one of these. the only tanks that a 30mm can knock out reliably would be some early crusaders and light armored cars. on the other hand, the .50 caliber round is able to penetrate and excess of 12mm at 0 degrees, more then enough to penetrate the roofs on most of the pzIII and pzIV series, and even the early tigers.

I think the germans made some of the best weapons during the war, the first operational jet, ME 262, Tiger, Jagdpanthers and all that stuff.

This compact but low - velocity beast was designed to seriously FUBAR bombers or possibly transports, in reply to Ol'Terkey these shells were explosive filled "mine" shells, designed to rip the targets open!

Mk103 was meant for hitting bombers at longer range. The ammo used in this has much poorer ballistics. But is till good for 1940's style aircraft.

good luck at hitting anything over 200m with something that has the ballistics of a bottle rocket. the 108 did have the firepower of a 40mm bofors, but certianly no where near its accuracy. All german ace's could agree on one thing, you had to be CLOSE to the enemy to have a certain kill, and by close i mean less then 200meters.
